NEW W.E.A. PLAY.
"WAITING FOR LEFTY." A distinct cut across the path of routine drama is' evident in the policy of the W.E.A.'s annual presentations. The 1936 j choice is Clifford Odets' social drama, "Waiting For Lefty," a strong story of social conflict, with a hotly-contested trade union meeting as its central setting. Daring experiments are once more being made use of for the play by way of lighting and staging. This applies also to casting—several of the leading characters have never taken a part before. The organisation has staged such remarkable plays as "The Cherry Orchard," "Six Characters in Search of an Author," "Masses and Man" and "The Hairy Ape," and "Waiting For Lefty" should prove to be another success in the line of difficult plays courageously attempted by this ambitious group. "Wajting For Lefty" will be preceded j by an introductory dance interpretation | of a poem of Hilaire Belloc's and a charming poetical drama by Gordon Bottomley entitled "Suilven and the Eagle." The entertainment is to be staged in the Old Grammar School. Lower Symonds Street, this evening and again on every night next week.
