THROWN INTO THE TIDE.

BRIDGE WORKER'S SWIM. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANG AREI, this day. As far as two men were concerned, there was a lull in the work on the new Victoria Bridge yesterday. A start was made in the morning with the stripping of the understructure of one span. The work necessitated the placing of heavy stringers on to a barge, and while a particularly big one was being manoeuvred the 12ft by Oft support carrying it broke. The foreman, Mr. J. A. and one of the workmen, Mr. A. Cebalo, were catapulted- into the tide and had to swim ashore. This is Mr. Sissons' second compulsory "dip" since the erection of the bridge began.
