FROM LONDON.
. I--8.8.C. REBROADCAST. CORONATION PROCLAIMED. : Those who listened on Saturday after- 1 noon to the 8.8.C. recorded rebroadcast of the proclamation of the date of the 1 King's Coronation, which took place in < London on Friday", were able to hear < fairly well. if 1 The actual reading of the proclamation * by the King at Arms, took only about 1 10 minutes. Some portions came through 1 exceptionally clearly, but others were '
e lost. Such broadcasts, however, arc not yet sufficiently common for those listeningin in New Zealand not to be amazed at being able to hear actually what took place 13,000 miles away. Commands ; given by officers to the King's Guard could be heard quite plainly. After the ceremony one could' hear an officer call, "King's Guard, King's Guard, Present Arms!" The National Anthem sounded, and came the command, "Slope Arms!" A pause . . . then, "Order Arms!" For that space, .even the click of heel on heel, and smack of hand on rifle could be heard. "By the King's proclamation, declar- : ing His Majesty's pleasure touching the ' Royal Coronation and His Majesty's ■ pleasure thereof, Edward R.I. ... we ! therefore . . " So began the proclamation, > read in a measured English voice, without haste or trace of flurry. The pro- ' clamation then gave the personnel of the Court of Claims, whose function i is explained in Saturday's cable news. i Such phrases as "Our loyal and loving subjects" add a touch of medieval splendour, which was enhanced when the announcer said that through a window he could see "trumpeters in red , and gold, with black caps and silver trumpets." The crowd was large, the announcer said, and curiously quiet, but the guardsmen had difficulty in keeping the people from the road, for there was not much room on the narrow pavements. The description was all so homely, with enough extrinsic detail to make alive the scene it told of.
