RACING AT ELLERSLIE.

THE OPENING DAY. SENSATIONAL HURDLES. AN OUTSIDER SUCCEEDS. Tlio Great Northern meeting opened at Ellerslie on Saturday in beautiful -weather, and it will long be remembered as providing one of the most sensational Great Northern Hurdle races that have ever been decided. Count Roussillion went early, while three horses, Scotch Nation, Benighted and Muster Musk fell at tlio hurdle in front of the judge's l)ox when entering on the last round, Scotch Nation breaking his near leg at tlio fetlock joint, and having to be destroyed. Clarion Call was left well clear, and still maintained his advantage at the second to last fence, where the favourite, Jolly Beggar, who was second, camo to grief. Clarion Call looked unbeatable at the last obstacle, "but struck it and dislodged his rider, leaving one of the outsiders in Prince of Orange to score. During the day the sum of £44,251 •was put through the machine for'eight races, compared with £48,283 10/ for seven race?, on the corresponding day last year, which was King's Birthday, a decrease of £4032 10/. The Chief Event. Soloist, Woodful, Valpeen, King Mestor, Black Marlin,'Booklaw, Indolent and Silk Sox were not paraded for the Great Northern Hurdle Race, for which .Jolly Beggar ( £1329), Scotch Nation (£1269) and The Smuggler (£958) were most in request, Prince of Orange ibeing entrusted with only £230. From a good even start Scotch Nation led past the stands from Contact, Clan Ronald, The Smuggler, Clarion Call and Thespis. Along the back Scotch Nation was out a length and a half in f»ont of Clarion Call, Contact, Thespis, The Smuggler, Benighted, Jolly Beggar, Prince of Orange, Wee Pat, Master Musk, King's Archer and Royal Limond,' the last-named pair being at intervals. Count Eoussillon fell at the fence by th'i three-furlongs post, and Clarion Call, who was jumping brilliantly, assumed command passing the stands-, being just clear of Scotch Nation, this pair having a big advantage over Contact,' Thespis, Jolly Beggar, Prince of Orange, The Smuggler, Benighted, • Wee Pat q.nd Master Musk. _ _ Scotch Nation fell at the second hurdle in the straight, while Benighted also came to grief, and Master Musk came down over Sim. This left Clarion Call with a lead of 12 lengths over Thespis, Prince of Orange, Jolly Beggar. The Smuggler, Wee Pat, King's Archer and Royal Limond. Contact fell at this stage and Clarion Call was out 20 lengths- from Jolly Beggar at the top stretch, with a gap of two lengths to Prince of Orange, Thespis, The Smuggler anil Wee Pat. Jolly Beggar fell at the- -second to . last fence, and the order in the straight was Clarion Call, fullv 12 lengths in front of Prinee of ■-Oran^TMtßi The Sflifl&glfer;- ' King's Arcljer, Thespis, Wee Pat and Royal Limond. The race looked all over, hut.. Clarion Call made a_ faulty jump at the last fence and lost his rider, this lfeaying Prince of Orange to go on and win by,six lengths from The Smuggler, who beat Royal Limond. by two lengths. Wee Pat was fourth and then came King's Archer. The Favourite Scores. Onewhetu (£1178), the Horowhenua■Tooley Street bracket (£845) and Royal Appellant (£798), were the favourite division for the Cornwall Handicap. Passing the stands Knight of Australia was in charge from Onewhetu, Royal Appellant, Tooley Street, Pakanui, Crooning, Te Hai, King Rey and Scotland, but Pakanui and Scotland both moved up smartly as they went out of the straight, and Pakanui led along the back from Scotland, Knight of Australia, Onewhetu, King Rey, Delrain, Tooley Street, Crooning, Te Hai, Royal Appellant, Sea Fox, Korero and Gay Rose, with Arawa Rose bringing up the rear. The leaders were practically unchanged as they raced across the top, and Pakanui was first into the straight from Scotland, Knight of Australia, Sea Fox, Onewhetu, Gay Rose and Korero. Once in line for the judge, Onewhetu challenged on the fence, and coming home .well, went on to win by three-quarters of a length from Pakanui, who beat Con Fuoco by a neck. Mungatoon was fourth, and then came Gay Rose, Scotland, Tooley Street, Sea Fox, Arawa Rose and Te Hai. \ The Hunters. The public were on the mark in -the -Hunt Club Hurdles in sending Illuminagh out favourite, witli £1127» while good money also came for Tangled ( £1043) and Cometra (£638). Cometra. and High Quality were first out, but Tangled soon ran through to the front, and led across the top from Bells of Boy, Illuminagh, Orenda, Royal Toast, Friendly Boy, and High Quality. Bells of Bow headed Tangled in the straight, and this pair were in the van passing the stands from Illuminagh, Royal Toast, -High Quality, Friendly Boy, Cometra, Orenda and Irish Comet. Thefe was nothing between Bells of Bow, Tangled and Illuminagh as they raced along the back where High Quality, Royal Toast, Cometra, Orenda, Friendly Boy and Irish Comet were following in order. Tangled went to the front crossing the top, and led into the straight from Illurainagh, High Quality, Bells of Bow and Irish Comet. Illuminagh hit the front approaching the last fence, and staying on well, went on to gain a decisive victory by two lengths from Tangled, who beat High Quality by five lengths._ Irish Comet, Cometra, Bells of Bow, Friendly Boy, Orenda and Royal Toast finished as named. The Open Sprint. Nineteen paraded for the final event, the Members' Handicap, and the princi pal selections were Puss Moth (£969) and Rereatu (£739), but the seventh fancy, Dollar Bill, carrying £408, just got up in a fine finish. Adalene, Bellkyrian, Enge, Tradesman and Puss Moth were in the forefront when the field settled down, and Adalene led across the top from Puss Moth, Dollai Bill, Galilee, Gold Mission, -Bellkyrian, Enge and Alby. Puss Moth then joined Adalene, and this pair were first into the straight from Dollar Bill, Galilee, Enge, Prince Acre and Sweet Rose, and in a rare battle Dollar Bill just got >up to gain the verdict by a neck from Adalene, who was .a similar distance; in front of Alby. ; Puss Moth was fourth, and then followed Mungacre, Galilee, Enge, Namakia, Bellkyrian, Greek Gold and Versant. - ■ "
