BUSY FRENCH CAPTAIN.
ROUND OF CALLS MADE. Since the arrival of the French sloop Savorgnan de Brazza at Auckland yesterday . morning, the captain, Capitaino-de-Fregat L. Robert, has spent most of his time making and receiving official calls. Accompanied by the French Consul, M. Edouard Joubert, who boarded the ship on her arrival, lie called on Commodore the Hon. E. It. Druimnond, and had lunch with hiin aboard H.M.S. Dunedin. Later he willed on the chairman, Mr. C. G. Macindoe, and officers of the Auckland Harbour Board, and visited the Cenotaph, at the foot of which he laid a wreath. This morning he called oil the Mayor, Mr. Ernest Davie, and was .later the guest of the Government) by the Hon. F. Jones, Minister of Defence, at a luncheon at the Grand Hotel, The French Consul will tender a dinner to him at the Grand Hotel to-night, and to-mor-row, accompanied. by six of. his officers and by Mr. F. B. Dwyer, of the Internal Affairs Department, he is to leave by motor for Rotorua and .Waitomo Caves, whence the party is to return on Sunday. Meanwhile the crew have been biisy cleaning and painting and generally tidying up after the week of stormy weather that they experienced before reaching Auckland. The ship went into dry dock this morning for .overhaul, and is expected to undock to-morrow or Friday.
