LORD CHESTERFIELD'S ADVICE TO HIS SON.
"Never seem wiser, nor more learned, than the people you are with. Wear your learning, like your watch, in a private pocket, and do not pull it out and strike it merely to show you have one; •" • * "' /. 'If you are asked what o'clock it is, tell it, but do not proclaim it hourly and unasked, like the watchman. v Philip' Dormer Stanhope, fourth Earl of Chesterfield (1694-1773), was a statesman and famous letter-writer. He was at various times in his life membei of the House of Commons, Ambassador to Holland, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, and Secretary of State. This extract from his many letters of advice to his son is particularly interesting, as it shows that watches were not common in his day.
