FISHERIES REGULATIONS.
It is clear from the statement issued on Saturday by the new Minister of Marine that he does not intend, to make any hasty decision as to the measures to be taken to conserve our fish supplies. Although it seems to be agreed that the supply is being depleted at present, there is beyond this a large area of controversial ground, upon which rival interests are constantly in conflict. It would be easy for Mr. Eraser to issue new regulations, but he wishes first of all to see whether the existing ones, properly enforced, are inadequate, and then to convince himself that new regulations, if found necessary, will be effectual and not merely vexatious. In the meantime, he says, his fisheries experts need additional information. The public will not be dissatisfied with the Minister's analysis of the situation, provided it is assured that there will be no avoidable delay in dealing with it.
