CITY AFFAIRS.

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL VARIETY OF TOPICS DISCUSSED. There was another full muster of members when the Auckland City Council met last evening. The Mayor, Mr. Ernest Davis, presided. Electoral Roll.—ln reporting on the" supplementary roll which was closed on May 13, the city valuer stated that, as a result of deaths and transiers of interests in properties since the elections last year, 2512 names had been deleted and 2045 new enrolments had been made. The result was that there were now 60,682 electors' names on the roll. Remuera Trees.—Considered to be in a dangerous position as regards their nearness to live wires, and a source of annoyance for years, trees at the corner of Garden and Remuera Roads are to be removed. The city engineer, Mr. J. Tyler, reporting on a request from a group of residents, said that the trees had been disfigured by storm damage and it would be an improvement to remove them. Town Hall Heating.—On the recommendation of the finance committee it was decided to install permanent wiring for feeding the various radiators at the Town Hall. Temporary heating had been installed and had proved a welcome innovation to the public, but under the Public Works regulations the temporary wiring had to be removed. The cost of the new wiring will be £88 and will supply 28 heaters.

Rounding-off of Comers. —It was decided to advise ratepayers of Wootton Road and Ely Avenue, liemuera, that the council is willing to set back the boundaries of properties situated at the corners of liemuera and Wootton , Roads and Wootton Road and Ely Avenue providing they Would assist, especially with regard to the acquisition of the property required. To eliminate the danger which is considered to exist at these points at present, the engineer, Mr. J. Tyler, estimated that expenditure of £150 would be entailed. Fish Landing Place.—Permission was granted to the Auckland Fishermen's Association, Limited, to unload their fishing boats at Julian's Wall, opposite tlieir premises in Halsey Street, which they intend to use as a fish market. The council granted the association the use of 100 ft of the wall at the pleasure of thfi council on payment of a royalty of £15 a year. Access to Beach. —In view of the fact that the residents of the locality were divided on the question, it was decided to take no action in connection with the request that a zig-zag track and stairway be formed to give access to the beach at the foot of Mercer Road. Fifty-nine signatories were attached to one petition urging the construction of the track, while 73 other residents expressed the opinion that the work was unnecessary. Tepid Bath Charges.—Reporting on a suggestion that the charges for admission to the tepid baths might be reduced from Gd to 3d during the winter months, the baths supervisor recommended that no further reduction be made. The recommendation was adopted.. Formation of Access Path.—After further consideration the works committee recommended that, with respect to the proposal to form an access path between Riddell Road and Glendowie Parade, that the applicants for the work to be carried out be advised that the work would be included in the schedule of intermittent work which the council proposed to undertake in the near future. The recommendation was adopted. Request for Baths.—A petition from residents of Point Chevalier requesting the council to consider favourably the erection of swimming baths in their district was referred to the parks committee for consideration and report. Grafton Bridge.—Mr. J. R. Anderson wrote suggesting that, in view of the many tragedies at Grafton Bridge, a grill should be erected as high as the lamp standards as a means of preventing persons climbing over the balustrade. The suggestion was referred to the works committee.
