BRIDGE TO BE ERECTED. ■ ••• NO CHANGE IN PEESENT COSTS. Proposals for a bridge at'Pipiroa over the Piako River, o$ the Pokeno-Coro-mandel main highway, were referred to at a meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council. At present a ferry operates. The assistant engineer of the Public Works Department notified that the Main Highways Board was arranging for the preparation of plans for a modern structure, with an opening span. The old plans drawn in 1923 would not be suitable. The Automobile Association (Auckland) advised that it was anxious to see through road connection to Thames as early as possible, and suggested the council approach the Main Highways Hoard with a. view to obtaining a subsidy. The association" said motorists had been subjected to a heavy toll in addition, to taxes,- and suggested the council should reduce the ferry charges. Mr. W. E. Hale moved the association be informed that, owing to the projected increase in operating _? costs/ the Council could not reduce the ferry charges. He said it might be necessary to increase them. . The motion was carried.
