FIRST DAY'S RESULTS,

SPRINT EVENT TO ADALENE.

rfl ie summer meeting of the Waikato Racing Club opened at Te ■ Rapa- on Saturday in showery weather, and the . „ was a sliado on the soft side. There was a very large attendance, and some keen racing was witnessed. The principal event of the day, the Storey Memorial, was won by Enge, who beat the improving Nun Nicer by threeuarters of a length. The Waikato Hack Gup resulted in a dead-heat, the judge Tjeing unable to separate Light Comedy a n(l°Mafeking. The President's Handicap was won by Adalene. During the day the sum of £28,820 10/ was put through the totalisator, compared with £22,397 10/ last year, an increase of £0429. Favourite Fails in Juvenile. When the field paraded- for the Juvenile Handicap, Gay Streak was the on ly withdrawal, and Rulette, Ned Cuttle and Palustre were in most demand. Rulette led out from. Palustre, Gav Chief and Surella. The last-named then took charge, and led across the top from Palustre, Chaytor, Abbess of Whitby, Philemup, Rulette and Surview. Surella was still in front entering the straight, with Palustre, Chaytor, Philemup and Ned Cuttle handy, followed by Eulette and MeriaPmoving up fast. Over the last half furlong Merial did best to win by three-quarters of a length from Ned Cuttle, who finished fast to iret second money, with Golden Sheila a neck away, third. Surella, Rulette, Surview, Gay Chief, Chaytor, Quadroon, and Falustre were next. ■ Abbess of Whitby, who appeared to cross her legs in the straight antl stumbled, was very lame when she returned to the birdcage.

The Storey Memorial. Mazir and Royal Artist were not saddled up for the "Storey Memorial and in a good betting race Prince Colossus, Enge and Nun Nicer got most support and they each paid dividends. The race was run in heavy rain and Velocipede, who was turned round when the barrier lifted, lost a lot of ground. Passing the stand Nun Nicer Nvas attended by Sinking Fund, Scotch Nation, Enge, Scotland, Prince Colossus, Day Wind, Tahurangi, Wait and See and Keitli Lu, with Velocipede last. Sinking Fund had change along the back from Enge, Nun Nicer, Prince Colossus and Gay Rosa, with Scotch Nation, Day Wind and Scotland, together, next; then came Tahurangi, Keith Lu and Wait and See. Enge ran°to the front, crossing the top from Sinking Fund, Prince Colossus, Nun Nicer and Gay Rose, with Scotland heading the others. "Prince Colossus and Nun Nicer followed Enge into the straight, but the last-named held on gamely to score by three-quarters of a length from Nun Nicer, with . Prince-. Colossus. the same distance away. Gay Rose, Tahurangi, Scotland, Velocipede and Day Wind were next. Wait and See feil about 20 yards from the post and injured one of her forearms severely.

Linley Handicap. Gloucester, Clessamor, Torch and Calshot were scratched for the Linley Handicap, in which the chief Selections were Grateful, Lornacre and Mangukaha. Whirling showed 1 out first from Bonnie Song, Teak, Grateful and Mangukaha, but crossing the top Teak took charge from Mangukaha, .Whirling, Lornacre, Gay Defence, Grateful, Triune and Bonnie Song. Entering the straight Teak was followed by Mangukaha and Lornacre (who ran out very wide), Gay Defence, Whirling and Grateful. In the run home Grateful came through to win by a neck from Mangukaha, who beat Gay Defence by two lengths. TeaiC, Lornacre, Whirling, Diacquedoon, Triune and Bonnie Song were next. Dead-heat in Hack Cup.

Red Sand and Gay Duke did not go to the post in the Waikato Hack Cup, and ■when betting ceascd Light Comedy, Mafeking and Pukeko were the prime fancies, and the public were correct in their summing up. Mafeking and. Snow Lap, Mungacre and King Brierly jumped out quickly, but along the back Mungacre was in charge from Dombey, Light Comedy, Mafeking, Snow Lap, Leo Colossus and Pukeko, with Pound Sterling, King Brierly and Tutor following, pukeko was just behind Mungacre crossing the top, with Mafeking, Dombey, King Brierly, Leo Colossus and Pound Sterling handy. There was little change into the straight, where Light Comedy moved up in fifth place, Dombey dropping back, and in a great finish Mafeking and Light Comedy crossed the line together, the judge declaring a dead-heat, with Pukeko a length away third. Mungacre, Leo Colossus, Pound Sterling, Racette, Valrent, Snow Lap and Tutor were next.

Racefield fell during the race and broke lis back. He was subsequently destroyed.

The President's. Refresher, Rereatu, Boughal, Tin Lap snd Coronis dropped out of the President's Handicap, and the Puss Moth-Gipsy Moth bracket, Prince Ven and Galilee had most friends. When they had settled down along the back Prince Ven was leading Galilee, Puss Moth, Bellkyrian, Gipsy Motli and Adalene. Crossing the top Prince Ven, Bellkyrian"' and Adalene w ere racing abreast, with Gipsy Motn iandy, then came King Ford, Puss Moth Galilee. Prince Ven led Adalene into the straight, with King Ford, Gi Psy Moth, Bellkyrian, Galilee and Puss Moth following. In the run home Adalene drew out to win by two length from Princess Star, with Gipsy Moth finishing fast for third money. Puss Moth, Prince Ven, King Ford, Star Artist and Galilee were next.

The Beerescourt. There were nine runners in the Beerescourt Handicap, the final event of the <%, and Wotan was a warm favourite, yliile Red Sand and Kilberis were also *1 demand. Queen Nona and Wahine Reihi began best, and along the back Queen Nona was leading Kilberis, Con Juoco, Enlightenment,* Wahine Reihi, La Femme Noire, Red gaud-and Wotan, A law a Rose las.t. Kilberis led .into the straight from Con F uoco, Wotan and Queen Nona, with La Femme Noire next. Holding his advantage in the run home Kilberis won bv a neck from Con Fuoeo, Arawa. Rose three-quarters of .a 'ength away. Wotan, Red Sand, and Enlightenment were next.
