HOW MUCH LONGER?

The serious mishap to the Rangatira in Cook Strait occurred on a mid-summer's morning, and at the same time the Mataroa, arriving at Auckland from England, was hove-to off; Cuvier Island, unable to enter port because of extremely bad visibility. It would not impress the master of either ship to be told that such a violent storm early in February is rare in New Zealand, for the Rangatira was badly damaged and the Mataroa was delayed for IS or 20 hours. Could this damage and this delay have been averted? In all probability they could. The Rangatira carries direction-finding apparatus, but there is no radio beacon at Wellington, and there is none at Auckland except that on Tiritiri Island, which is of limited use.

How much longer must the two main ports of the Dominion wait before the Marine Department installs apparatus -which will enable incoming ships, whatever the state of the weather, to ascertain their position and I keep on their course? The chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board, Mr. Macindoe, expresses confidence that the Marine Department, under its new Ministerial head, will do something in the near future to provide radio beacons, but the public has the right to oxpecta precise announcement by the Minister.
