BABY JEAN.

There she lav, sleeping in lier tinycot, the gentle fragrant breezes of early morning tossing her curly hair on to the pillow, where it lay like strands of gold against the soft wliite. Slowly she moved her little head, stretched a small white arm, and awoke —awoke to another spring day. Through the curtained windows two sleepy blue eyes watched the stream cascading down the hillside, wending its way over stones and falle* trees; saw the bright flowers nodding 5n the garden, and the trees whispering their secrets to the wind. Tiny wood fairies played in the swaying grass, occasionally flying up to the open window, to peep mischievously in at Jean, contentedly Sucking a baby fist. Down in tlie valley a thin white mist was slowly lifting, and Baby Jean gurgled with delight when it passed over the hill top, as the sun rose above the height in the east. The flowers lifted their dainty heads to greet it, while the birds twittered their morning songs from the tree tops. Soft music floated on the air—music from fairy flutes, it seemed—accompanied by a low sweet voice singing a dreamy lullaby. Baby Jean listened and smiled. That was mother's voice. With the smile still hovering on her baby lips, two little eyes flickered, and then once again Baby Jean slugt.
