[} LUCKLESS HOLIDAY CRUISE. a ® THREE MEN PALL OUT OF BOAT. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) " TAUMARUNUI, this day. Three Ohakune residents, Messrs. H. Pearce, J. S. Ranger and W. F. Mahoney, had a lucky escape yesterday afternoon I when they fell out of a boat into the i Wangamri River opposite Herlihy's - BlufT, about four miles from Tau--1 marunui. , The party arrived from Ohakune in . the morning with a boat which they 1 had made out of a kahikatea tree, and 2 early in the afternoon they launched - the ci*aft loaded with provisions, fishf ing tackle, guns and camp gear in s Onjrarue River, below the old Wanganui r River boat landing. It was the intention of the party to drift leisurely down 3 "New Zealand's Rhine" to Wanganui, > camp on the way, enjoy the scenery and - fish. t After passing the junction of the Wanganui and Ongarue rivers, the men - decided to hoist a sail and the boat > went down the river in fine style until [ rounding a bend, when the boat struck a hidden snag or rock and the oceu- ■ pants fell overboard. The boat did j not capsize, and while the men were i swimming ashore it drifted in fast- ■ gunning water to the right bank, where r Mr. H. Styles, a roadman employed on the highway, who saw the accident. • secured the craft. The men walked . back to Taumarunui, where they secured ; dry clothing, and after a rest went ; back to their boat and collected their , belongings. They presented the craft to children living near the scene of the accident and returned home to Ohakune by train, j I
