RIFLE SHOOTING.
SHOOTS AT PENROSE. (By SPOTTER.) The Akarana Club fired a club championship match at Penrose on Saturday • over ranges of 500 yards and 600 yards, while the City Club fired inter-club coached teams' matches over the same distances. E. J. C. Reston, with a score of 46, 3 48 —94, was top for the day in the A l grade. Reston has been one of the most - prominent marksmen in the city, but has struck lean times in the bullseye market i for a couple of seasons. It is pleasing t to see him at the top again on the eve j of the Auckland district rifle meeting, to I be held on the 29th inst. R. F. Wakefield, another prominent performer, was second to Reston in this • grade. He also has not shown his best ; form this season. His card read 47, 46— ' 93. The veteran and last year's club champion W. Powell was close lip with : 48, 44—92. J. G. Jones-Parry and W. , Colquhoun made 91 each. The B section produced the best hit > of the day 45, 49—94, made by T. Bevan. . Bevan, who competed with marked success : at the recent military meeting as a service : marksman, is an artillery officer, but a ; very keen supporter of rifle shooting, and one of the most enthusiastic marksmen at Penrose. W. Oxley came through with • 45, 46—91, and was again an easy winner of C section. For City (all members -coached), Harris equalled the top score for the day, but was counted out by Bevan. Harris' card read 46, 48—94. He continues to produce the brilliance that hae attended his shooting for several weeks past, which should cause him to figure prominently in the Auckland meeting. T. L. Blomfield, 47, 46 —93. is coming on again. Bowes, 48, 45—93, although not filling the top place, has been showing consistency. Other fair scorers were S. C. Parkinson 92, C. J. M. Clark and A. J. Pieterson 90 each. The B grade produced a 47, 45 —92. This came to M. Milligan, who has not been showing his best form of late. J. E. Kelly, who is leading for the B grade championship, made 45, 45—90. Provincial Championship.^ Arrangements for the Auckland provincial prize meeting, to be held on Anniversary Day, are well in hand and entries are already being received by the secretary, Mr. J. M. Jessop. The prize list is a good one, both for A and B grade shots. It may be of interest to competitors to know that the new Trentham rule allows a waterproof cover over rifles when shooting in wet weather. Another little point which may be noted is that a lens may be used in the "peep." Only one glass is allowed. Spectacles are allowed, but must not be used in conjunction with a lens in the "peep."
