M.C.C. TEAM.
Seven of the Side With Test
Match Prospects.
In the Marylebone touring team appear to be seven possibilities for the English Test visit here next season, states a Melbourne writer. They are Hardstaff, Baxter, Human, Holmes, Griffith, Sims and Langridge.
The team was not impressive at first, but improved as they became accustomed to Australian wickets. Not until the concluding matches did the batting acquire sparkle and the bowling venom. Gaining confidence, players began to reveal their true form.
With 230 not out and 63 in the last game at Sydney, Joseph Hardstaff, year-old Xotts batsman, showed virile batting of real Test class. Australia definitely expects to see more of him. With his pace, in-swingers—-.and figures —A. D. Baxter, 23-year-old Scottish bowler, was convincing. He should be an even finer bowler next season, and seems reasonably assured of the Test
Bright and smiling, J. H. Human, 23, shaped like a batsman, and with concentration may force Ms way into the team.
E. R. T. Holmes impressed as an inspiring, enthusiastic leader, bound to sow good will wherever he goes. He may not be a genius, but he is a thorough sportsman, and a rattling good cricketer, who as all-rounder would probably do better in a stronger side. He may yet prove to be the Test captain that England so urgently needs to replace the unlucky Bob Wyatt.
A classy young wicket-keeper, S. C. Griffith, stands an excellent chance of selection. ' Though they appear a shade below Test standard, James Langridgo and J. M. Sims are both useful allrounders who would be handy in any team touring Australia. H. D. Read, the much trumpeted Essex fast bowler, proved a. false alarm in Australia. Still, the feeling persists that this young express may yet make good in Test cricket. He seems to hava it in him. Australian wickets were not fiery enough for him.
In his modest 12 at Melbourne N. S. Mitchell-limes gave glimpses of delightful stroke-making. Yet he has failed on Australian wickets, with an average of only 15. Tins-may debar him from the next Test team.
