ANNUAL TOURNEY.
Leng Beats Brown in the
Men's Singles.
In fine though overcast weather, the third day's play of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association's annual handicap tournament began this morning. The tourney made good progress, and the final rounds of four events take place on Monday.
"So far there have been few surprises," said Mr. J. TV Harrison, under whose control the games are being played this afternoon. "Several young players are showing great promise. Two outstanding among these are J. H. Mollcr, aged 15, who has reached the semi-final in the lower division, and K. H. Lewis, a young player of much promise, who was beaten by J. Leng in the semi-final of the upper division. As generally, the backmarkers are coming through in these events. Entries arc nearly double those of last year, and the handicap has proved good." Late Afternoon's Play. Ideal conditions favoured the continuation of the play this afternoon, and as the final rounds drew near there wae keen public interest in the tournament. The first event to finish was the ladies' singles in the second division, which 'comprised third and lower grade and outer suburban players. This event was won by Mrs. O. €. Haynes (owe 3-1,)). In a keen but steady contest in the final of the men's singles in the same division J. Beaumont won from C. >i. Cars ton. Interest was keen in the final of the men's singles, upper division, when J. Leng won from A. Brown in what was probably the best game in the tournament. 'Although both were obviously feeling the strain of earlier matches, the gariie was close and colourful. Leng's performance was a splendid one. In a steady game Miss B. L. Bishop beat Miss E. Stewart to win the ladies' singles event in the upper division. Miss Bishop's true serving and smashing in the third set helped to win her the match. FIRST AND SECOND GRADES. MEN'S SINGLES. Semi-finals. J. Leng beat K. H. Lewis, G—2, 2^-0, A.' D. Brown beat O.
