THE WEEK'S WORK.
THE FLOWER GARDEN. Stake and disbud Border Carnations as they run to flower. Remove spent blooms on Roses, Rhododendrons, Azaleas and other flowering shrubs. If aphis appears on Roses spray with a nicotine spray. As the flowers fade on Aquilegias the stalks should be cut back to prevent seeding. The Aquilegia will flower well for several years if this is attended to. Prepare ground for planting Liliums candidum and longiflorum. These should be planted as soon as flowering is over. Lift bulbs that have died off. Leave on ground only long enough to dry then take under cover. Prepare the ground for planting bulbs. .' The ground needs time to consolidate before planting begins. THE GREENHOUSE. A small sowing of East Lothian and Beauty Stock can be made now for flowering in pots under glass. Zonal Geraniums for winter flowering should be potted as they require it. Pinch out the points of the shoots to produce a stocky plant. A sowing of Coleus can be made for autumn decoration. Salvia splendens can be potted for winter decoration. Pick out seedlings of Begonias, Gloxinias, etc. THE VEGETABLE GARDEN. If possible mulch crops such as Peas and Beans. Sow Lettuce, Spinach and Radish. Shade and manure if necessary during hot weather. Cultivate well between growing crops. A dust mulch will conserve moisture. Make plantings of Brussels Sprouts, Broccoli, Savoys for winter use. Tomatoes can be planted. Attend to staking, etc., of those planted earlier. Arsenate of lead is a sure cure for the Tomato grub or caterpillar. Hoe the soil between Onions. Pulling the soil away from the bulbs will assist the ripening. Sow Dwarf Beans according to requirements. Sow half a dozen seeds of Sweet Corn every week. THE FRUIT GARDEN. Thin out heavy crops of Apples and Pears. Single fruits only should be left. Spray with arsenate of lead for codlin moth. Spray for brown rot, use collodial or wettable sulphur.
