CHICORY.
To grow good chicory, the soil must be deep, not too heavy, and in a fairly rich condition. The best time to sow is about the middle of December; if earlier the plants are apt to flower and weak roots are the result. Sow in drills a foot apart and about an inch deep, covering immediately with fine soil. When the seedlings are a few inches high thin them to 9in apart in the rows and use the hoe frequently to keep down weeds and to aerate the soil. By the end of May the roots should have attained their "full growth. They should be lifted and. stored in sand in a cool, frost-proof place. The best variety for general culture is common. Witloof is very good —it has very large mid-ribs and when blanched resembles Cos lettuce.
