GREEN GOOSEBERRIES.
The advantage of commencing to gather green gooseberries as soon as they have passed that stage when they "taste of the tree" is not infrequently supposed to end with their consumption in puddings and pies. That they are delicious then is true, but there are other benefits. The first is that the fruits that are left attain a much larger size and finer flavour than, if they had to share the nutriment with scores of others on the bushes; the second point is that the relief afforded to the plants in this matter is of immense benefit to future crops. The buds which are to carry the next fruits receive more nourishment, and consequently finish to perfection, provided, of course, that the weather is favourable. Buds and ripening fruits are assisted, too, by a reduction of the summer wood.
