COBAEA SCANDENS.
Although there are many species of the cobaea, C. scandens, owing to its ease of culture and rapid growth, is the best known. It is a half hardy perennial. The bell-shaped flowers as they open are of a pale green tint, but they gradually assume a rich purple colour. 0. scandens will thrive in any welldrained soil, which should not be made too rich, or the growth becomes rampant and blooms scarce. In the spring the plants should be cut down to the ground, when a fresh growth will be made from the base. If this is not done the lower part of the plant becomes bare and unsightly, only the upper part carrying foliage and flowers. This plant is easily raised from seed sown now, and is a good rampant climber for covering up large arbours or unsightly corners. There is a pretty variety of this, C. scandens variegata, which has ornamental leaves, nicely margined.
