DOMINION CONGRESS. POSITION OF PLAYERS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this clay. Games in the second and third rounds of the Dominion chess championship were played yesterday. The games in the second round were: — Gyles v. Dyer.—French defence and nu open, even middle game until Gyles established a strong pawn centre. Gyles later made a strong attack with queen and rook and checkmated in two. Armstrong v. Purely. — Armstrong played the English opening. Purdy made a strong attack which Armstrong .was unable to repel and the latter resigned. Erskine v. Burry.—Erskine played the queen's bishop gambit. Burry, with a pawn at bishop six, threatened to set up a checkmate, but his counter attack failed and lie resigned at move 33. Rolling v. Jones. —Rolling played the Ruy Lopez and, concentrating r o win the king's pawn, gave Jones an opportunity to work up a fine combination. The latter drew Rolling into checkmating position, which he brought about very neatly on the 20th move. Rutherfurd v. Abbott. —An interesting queen's pawn game. In the middle game exchanges Abbott improved his combination and was able to force Rutherfurd to resign on the 41st move. Play in the third round resulted: — Dyer v. Baeyertz.—Another queen's pawn game. In the end game Dyer fell into a trap and was forced to resign on the 27tl| move. Purdy v. Relling.—From a queen's pawn opening Purdy launched a strong queen side attack and won a finelyplayed game. Beyer v. Armstrong.—Another Sicilian game. Beyer neatly won a bishop and was able to win the end game. Abbott v. Erskine. —A queen's pawn game. With a queen side pawn advance Erskine forced the exchanges and, wearing down Abbott's defence, pushed the pawn on to queen. Abbott resigned.
