TAURANGA REGATTA.
POPULAR HOLIDAY FIXTURE. NGA TOA'S NARROW WIN. KEEN ROAVING EVENTS. 'I i.e annual Tauranga regatta was held in ideal summer weather. There was a record attendance from Auckland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty districts. Sailing and rowing races were the main features, and prizes were well distributed. In the big keel yacht race Nga Toa beat Ladye Wilma by (is. Matxia won the C and E "class keel race by 4(is. The display of dancing by a specially trained partv of East Coast Maoris was a feature of the regatta this year. Results: — ROWING. Maiden Fours, one mile. —Tauranga (G. Washer, G. W. Smith, J. Bullmer, A. Carter) 1, West End (Bigelow, L. learon, R W. Rowe, G. S. Bigelow) 2, Hamilton (J. Hurrell, O. Jackson, J. Kane, E. Wright) 3. Also started : Mercer, Waitemata. Tauranga won by a loot trom est End, with Hamilton half a length away. Hamilton struck a buoy near the town wharf which steadied them temporarily. Waitemata was fourth. Maiden Double Sculls, one mile. —Waitemata (K. Simpson, N. Simpson) 1, lauranga (.1. Sander, C. Cameron) 2, Hamilton (J Stewart, B. Frogley) 3. Also started: West End. Waitemata stalled off the local crew to win by a length, with Hamilton -half a length away third. West End was fourth.
Single Sculls, one mile. — A. Morey (Mercer) ISs 1; S. Penberthy (Hamilton). 25s 2; I'l'W. St. Clair (Hamilton), 255, 3. 7uso started: C. Haua (Tauranga), 20s; J. 11. Plummer (Tauranga), Lis; K. a. Smith (Waitemata), scr; T. D. Harvey (Tauranga), 225; F. V. Conway (West End), 355; T. J. Plummer (Tauranga), ISs Conway, the limit' man, held his advantage for three-quarters of a mile. Morey moved up rapidly opposite the town wharf and finished resolutely to win by a length. Pemberthy came with a great spurt to beat the veteran St. Clair by 2ft. for second place. Conway was fourth and the others close up, the race being one of the finest ever seen here.
Maiden Fours, one mile.—Mercer No. 1 (W Donaldson, C. Meßobbie, A. Meßobbie, R Morey). 1 ; Hamilton No. 1 (D. Frogley L Skeet, J. Stewart, K. Williams), 2; Ngaruawahia (R. McFarlane, N. Mcßurnev, G. Tittlcton, F. Fuller), ". Also started: Mercer No. 2, Hamilton No. 2, Whakatane, West End, Waitemata, Auckland, Tauranga. In a great finish Mercer No. 1 lasted long enough to win from Hamilton No. 1 by 2ft, with Ngaruawahia a canvas away, third. Auckland was fourth, and the others were well bunched.
Junior Fours, one mile and a half.— Tauranga No. 2 (S. Smith, J. H. Plummer, K. Tonkin, T. J. Plummer), 1; Hamilton (C. Lewis, W. Brooks, M. Taylor, F. Choat), 2; West End (M. 11. D. Conway, W. C. Parnell, J. H. Barton, L, T. Lambie), 3. Also started : St. George's, Waitemata, Tauranga No. 1. The northerly breeze and ebbing tide worked up a heavy jobhle, which was. responsible for the swamping of four boats. Tauranga No. 2 won easily from Hamilton. West End swamped right on the finishing line and gained third place.
Senior Fours, two miles.—Hamilton (G. St. Clair, J. Clough, I. Duncan, G. Taylor) 1. Tauranga (B. Waters, C. Rhodes, C- Haiia, D. Harvey) 2. The only starters. Hamilton won by four lengths.
Maiden Pair Oars, one mile.—Mercer (W. Donaldson, ('. Meßobbie) 1, West End (J. H. Jones, E. J. G. Hotham) 2, Ngartmwuhin (J. Wright, R. .McFarlane) 3. Five started. T and S Class.—B. Sneddon and L. Bell's Marie 1, P. Densem's Dorcen 2, I. McLaren's Charm 3. Six started. Z Class.—G. Carter's Oi 1, G. Wilson's Tio 2, T. Benson's Me Too 3. Five started. Centreboard Boats, 26ft and under. — Tilby Brothers' Wizard 1, H. Kensington's Mavis 2. Three started. Wizard won the Clench trophy. Keelers' Handicap.—Winstone Brothers' Nga Toa 1, P. Newcombe's Ladye Wilma 2, Patterson and Brown's Windward 3. Won by six seconds. C and E Class. —P. Simmonds' Matua 1. Norris and Allen's Moutcre 2, Neyill and Coote's lona 3. Launch Rnce.—C. Cameron's Caledonian 1, L. Oliver's Valencia 2, S. Benson's Gertie 3. Six started. The trophies were presented on Regatta night in the Rivoli Theatre by the president of the committee, Mr. H. E. Olding, who thanked tho Auckland yachtsmen for their continued support, and congratulated the rowing men on their fine display. Due to local and Auckland assistance, the Maori events, and particularly the very tine weather,, the. regatta had been a great success in every "way. The Colin Norris Memorial Gold Cup was presented •to r Mr. Noel , Tattersfield, skipper of Altair, the winning yacht in the ocean race. Mr. Geo. Winstone received the second prize, also the . champion Hag for first boat to finish, presented by Mr. Arthur Brett, -Mr. Coote receiving the third prize for lona. The rowing events, Mr. Olding said, were keenly contested, several being won by a few feet. The prize-money was well distributed. Tauranga won £24, Hamilton £22, Mercer £16, Waitemata £5, West End £3, .and North. Shore £1. On the call of Mr. Olding the winners were heartily cheered. He also mentioned the. good work of Messrs. J. Denby, ' A. Stewart and J. Sutton, who did long duty at The Mount waiting for the yachts to finish ; to Mr. Harold Stevens for use of his carrier pigeons, and Mr. W. A. Wilkinson for his handicapping of the keel yachts and assistance as starter and timekeeper. The number of visitors this year was fully up to past standards, motorists being very numerous, all the camping sites being occupied and the accommodation houses fullv Aooked. The Mount was as popular as usual; the'launch service from Tauranga being continued until midnight. In addition'to the ten yachts which finished in the ocean race, there was a big muster of local and visiting craft. • '-,
