F. Holmes is one of the veterans of the trotting sport. His association with trotting extends over a long period of years during which time ho has won practically every race of note in the Dominion. Last year Holmes was driving at Ashburton on Boxing Day, and by making the flight to Auckland by aeroplane, was in Auckland next day to drive Rpi l'Or to victory in the Auckland Trotting Cup. This week he repeated the performance, going just a little: better in that he won the Ashburton Cup on Boxing Day with Roi l'Or, and followed it up yesterday with a win in the Auckland Trotting Cup with Graham Direct, thereby Winning the double. The gold cup which went with the winning stake in yesterday's Cup was presented to Holmes after the race by the Prime Minister, the Hon. M. J. Savage, Holmes- receiving the trophy in the absence of the owner of the horse, Mr. J. Westcrman.
