CHESS TOURNEY.
THIRD ROUND CONCLUDED. POSITIONS OF THE PLAYERS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this clay. The Dominion chess tourney was continued to-day. The following game's were concluded this morning:— Jones v. Armstrong.—A queen's pawn game which created interest. Pawns were established well forward and Armstrong, in the exchanges, gained a passed pawn on the queen's side. A long sound game ended in a draw.
Purdy played Bird's game against Severne and in the middle of the game worked up a strong position, with two pawns well advanced. In an ,endeavour to capture tliese pawns Severne left himself open to the loss of a piece and resigned at the 51st move. Severne and Beyer played a well-con-tested Sicilian game, in which Beyer changed queens ■ early. He later won a pawn, but with further exchanges he was left with a rook and a pawn against a rook, and had. to be content with a draw. Baeyertz nlayed the queen's pawn game against Scott, who was able to get a somewhat better position. Scott later on won the exchange, but Baeyertz, with a wellsupported pawn at the queen's sixth, was able to force a draw..
