DISASTER FEARED.
EARTHQUAKE IN CHINA. CHENGTU (China), December 26. . Fragmentary reports from southern Szechuan Province yesterday indicated that an earthquake on December 18 destroyed numerous villages and caused a death roll that may reach thousands, the primitive mountain-dwelling Lolo tribesmen being the chief sufferers.
The inaccessibility, of the devastated area has made it impossible to determine the exact extent of the disaster. Reports refer to a mountain having split open for a mile, and avalanches which dammed streams and turned fertile valleys into lakes.
