THREE TOURNAMENTS. CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. The three tournaments in the Dominion chess congress commenced at Wellington to-night. The competitors in the championship are:—-C. J. S. Purdy (New South Wales), J. A. Erskino (Southland), I. Burry, D. I. Jones and R. A. Baeyertz (Auckland), H. R. Abbott and H. J. Armstrong (Canterbury), E. J. Dyer, F. K. Kellogg, K. Beyer, A. D. A. W. Gyles (Wellington), R. O. Scott (Wanganui), E. H. Severno (Nelson), and E. S. Rutherfurd (Taranaki).

Those in the minor tournaments are: — Goldsmith, Anderson, - Hardy, Hutchings, Kirkwood (Wellington), Brown (Napier), Stewart, R. Christiansen and H. Cliristensen (Palmerston North), Fairburn (Gisborne), F. Langley and Watt (Otago). Players in the ladies' tournament are: — Mesdames Goldsmith (Wellington), Short and Thorpe (Auckland), Abbott (Christchurch), Dunlop (Dunedin), Ratcliffe and Pleasants (Wanganui). The results of jjlay in the first round of the championship are:— Scott v. Gyles.—A queen's pawn game, with even development. In the. middle game Scott allowed Gyles to get the better of the pawn position and later Gyles won a pawn. A sound end game gave him the victory. Beyer v. Erekine. —An interesting Sicilian game. Erskine opened Beyer's king rook to his queen and rook for a dangerous attack. Beyer sacrificed the rook for a knight, obtaining a true attack and enabling him to win at the 35th move. Rutherfurd v. Baeyertz.—A very even queen's pawn game, with Rianchetto development. It ended in a draw. Burry v. Abbott. — Another Sicilian game. Burry built up an attack and Abbott, in seeking to escape from a tight corner, exceeded the time limit and losti the garne. j
