RUGBY FOOTBALL.
'VARSITY TEAM FOR JAPAN. SEVEN GAMES TO BE PLAYED. SAILS PROM AUCKLAND MONDAY. The members of the New Zealand University Rugby football team for Japan are to assemble in Auckland next Monday, and will sail by the Aorangi at 11 o'clock that night to connect at Sydney with the steamer for the East. The team is: — Backs—McAuliss (Canterbury), Rae (Victoria), Gillies (Otago), Parsons (Canterbury), Fookes (Otago), Wild (Victoria), Lewis (Auckland), Grant (Auckland), Watt (Otago), Jones (Otago), Bush (Auckland), Tricklebank (Victoria). Forwards —Burke (Canterbury), Thomas (Auckland), Stace (Canterbury), Chapman (Otago), Eade (Victoria), Simmes (Otago), Drake (Auckland), McVeagh (Auckland), P. J. Wilson (Canterbury), Hudson (Canterbury), Chesterman (Victoria), Laney (Otago).
Green, of Otago, was in the original (selection made by Mr. P. Martin-Smith (Wellington), but as he could not make the trip Chesterman was chosen to fill the vacancy. Itinerary in Japan:— January 23—Arrival at Kobe. January 26—v. Ivwansai (Western), picked team, at South Koshien. January 30 —v. Kwanto (Eastern) picked team, at Meiji Shrine Stadium (Tokyo). February 2—v. Kwanto, No. 1 Student team, at Meiji Shrine Stadium. February s—v. Combination o£ Kwanto students, Nos. 2 and 3 teams, at Meiji Shrills Stadium. February S) —v. All-Japan students, at Meiji Shrine Stadium. February 11—v. Kigensetsu and Ivwansai students, at Hanazono (Osaka). February 10—v. All-Japan students, at Hanassono February 17—Depart from Nagasaki. It is also expected that two games will be played at Hongkong.
