Main Highway.—A further letter was received from Mr. F. IS. Dyson, representing No. 2 District Highways Council, in reply to the desire of the council to carry out with its own staff and plant the work of widening and surface sealing portions of the main highway through Birkenhead. This stated: "Although the Main Highways Board does not see any good reason for departure from its- usual policy to carry out all new work by contract, still in. this instance, under the circumstances, the work can be carried out by your borough at the schedule rates supplied. The whole of the work covered by the approved proposals must be carried out according to this schedule, and no further funds can be expected from the Main Highways Board than the £3 for £1 subsidy on quantities and prices mentioned in the schedule." The council decided to convey its satisfaction at the concession granted, and authorised the work.

Water. —The waterworks engineer, Mr. Walter Williams, reported that during the past month 2,857,000 gallons of water from the city supply had been delivered into the Birkenhead reservoir, which was 940,000 gallons less than for the corresponding period last year.
