FIRE DANGER.
DURING SUMMER MONTHS. CALLS TO GRASS OUTBREAKS. Between November 20 and December 11 the Fire Brigade answered 51 calls, of which 20 were actual fires, 13 were grass or rubbish, 11 false alarms and seven chimney fires. Residents can help in protecting the city from fire damage by exercising special care during the summer months with matches, cigarette ends, and so on, in places where grass fires might result from carelessness. The danger lies not so much in grass fires, as in the chance that while brigade machines are attending them a big outbreak might occur in the city or suburbs at which all the nearest available machines might be urgently required.
At a meeting of the Eire Board to-day the chairman, Mr. J. J. Kingston, drew attention to the danger of fire destroying pohutukawa trees at Ngapipi Road, Hobson Bay. He suggested that the City Council might erect a sign forbidding the lighting of fires there. It was decided to write to the City Council accordingly.
