BOXING IN ENGLAND.
Palmer Gets Points Verdict From Wenstob. STRICKLAND IS DEFEATED. United Press Association.—Copyright. (Received 1 p.m.) LONDON, November 12. In a boxing bout at the "Wembley Stadium Ambrose Palmer, Australia (12.7), won on points from Ed. Wenstob, Canada (12.5). In 10 rounds in the same ring Tommy Loughran (America), ex-light-heavy champion of the world, also secured a points decision over the New Zealand heavy-weight champion, Maurice Strickland. Palmer outboxed Wenstob, but his punches were of insufficient weight to encourage those desiring to see him matched against Jack Petersen for the Empire championship. Palmer only used his right in the infighting, depending upon his straight left with which the Canadian was unable to deal. Accordingly the latter soon was bleeding at the nose, at which the Australian continually poked. Palmer occasionally connected with a reasonable left-hook, but whenever he tried for a knock-out Wenstob was not there. Palmer entered the ring with a patch over his left eye, which Wenstob opened badly in the sixth round. The Canadian, a rougli-and-ready boxer, made Palmer appear less effective than his supporters hoped, the Australian being more preoccupied in avoiding a chance knock-out than in obtaining one. Loughran was a better stylist than Strickland,'but he often lacked punchingpower. He was twice cautioned in the second round for hitting low. The American scored freely in the opening rounds. Strickland became more forceful as the • fight progressed, but he was frequently outboxed. Loughran cleverly avoided Strickland's rights, and simultaneously scored heavily with well-placed body deliveries. He opened a cut above Strickland's right eye in the eighth round. Pierce exchanges marked the closing rounds, Strickland landing 'a terrific right to the jaw in the ninth, but Loughran was an easy winner on points.
