A violent hurricane struck the Turkish steamer Inebolu as she was entering Smyrna Harbour at midnight. She foundered and sank with 90 of her passengers and crew on board. ( A British cargo steamer, the Polo, rushed to her assistance and managed to take off 100 passengers in pitch darkness before water invaded the Inebolu's holds, causing her to sink in a few minutes.
