THAMES HARBOUR.
SILTING UP OF CHANNEL STEAMER SERVICE THREATENED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) THAMES, this day. The Thames Harbour Board met last evening, when the honorary supervising secretary, Mr. S. Elisor, reported on the collection of rates. The total of £4103 4/3 represented 74.83 per cent, as compared with 68 per cent last year. . The Northern Steamship Co. advised that the silting up of the channel at Burke Street wharf was hampering the steamer service. The small steamer Hauiti had been stuck in the mud several times during the past month and dredging of the berth was an urgent necessity, without which the service to Thames would have to be terminated. It was decided to open negotiations with the Public Works Department \. to the possibility of securing the services of a suction dredge from Paeroa to clear the channel, and to secure an estimat| for the work. The chairman, Mr. H. Lowe, suggested diverting the Moanataiaire stream to run under the wharf as a means of scouring the berth and channel. •
