"BREATHING SPELL."
Renewed Confidence in U.S.A, Business Circles. PRESIDENTIAL PROSPECTS. NEW YORK, September 8. In the heaviest Saturday trading since February 10, 1934, on the New York stock market prices advanced sharply yesterday, apparently on renewed confidence in business circles, duo to Mr. Roosevelt's reference to a "breathing spell." A total of 1,289,000 shares changed hands with price increases from fractions to five points. Standard industrials such as General Motors and United States Steel were among '-he leaders. All cereal prices were higher but this probably was due to Canada "pegging" the price at 87J cents a; bushel. The Washington correspondent of the "nW York Times" says it is learned that there is strong pressure from Republican groups throughout the country to force the leaders to run on a coalition ticket in 1930 as the only means of defeating Mr. Roosevelt. It is even suggested by one group that an ideal combination would be Mr. Henry Ford for President and Mr. Lewis Douglas, formerly director of the Budget, for Vice-President. This, it is believed, would attract the Independents and the Conservative Democrats from Mr. Roosevelt's banner. Members of the Republican committee, however, say they are opposed to the proposal as Mr. Douglas is a Democrat and Mr. Ford, although he was a supporter of Mr. Calvin Coolidge and Mr. Herbert Hoover, voted for Mr. Woodrow Wilson, and himself ran for the Senate on the Democrat ticket in 1918.
