NEW FIRE ENGINE.

MACHINE FOR ATJCK&AND. At a cost of £853 a new fire engine is to be purchased by the Auckland Metropolitan Fire Board, and it is expected to be delivered in about three months' time. The chassis will be of Canadian manufacture, but the body ami the pump will be made and fitted in Auckland. The superintendent. Mr. W. L. Wilson, on whose recommendation the machine is being bought, said that lie had carried out exhaustive tests with different machines, and the one he had chosen had been found the most suitable. It had come up to all of the board's specifications. It was capable of a speed of 30 miles an hour on a grade of one in 12. The capacity of the pump would be 400 gallons a minute. There were over 20 machines in the Dominion similar to the one ho had chosen, and they had all given satisfactory service. The average distance a machine would be required to travel in a year was only about 300 miles. All new machines in London, said the chairman, Mr. J. J. Kingston, were closed, to protect the men against the weather. He had discussed this aspect with the superintendent and they had agreed that machines of that type were not necessary in Auckland. The weather here ya,H not sufficiently cold.
