ONLOOKERS' VIEWPOINT.
THE RANFURLY SHIELD. "True- Blue and White" writes: —On Saturday Auckland will be called on to withstand another Ranfurly Shield challenge from the strong Canterbury fifteen. Can they do. it? I have my doubts, if 'the Auckland team (especially the backs), which was beaten by Taranaki, takes the : field. The selection of the forwards is not ; a difficult job, for there are plenty of ' good packmen only waiting for a trial. The selector apparently finds the rearguard selection a different problem, because he will persist in including the same men, irrespective of club performances. Fraukham, Hedge, Pearson and Currey could easily be replaced by backs who every week give a good account of themselves. Inglis, Neale, Curtayne, Haslam, Lash, Moses are a few who please the crowds at headquarters. If Killeen is out now, why not a new combination to include Inglis (Grafton), Cur- ■ tayne, Neale, Haslam, with Grant and Lash or Moses as wingers? This set-of backs—a strong defensive rearguard—is what is required to hold the Canterbury team.
