Writings Challenge the Virgin Birth.
ACTION BY ARCHBISHOP. (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph-Copyright) (Received 1 p.m.) MELBOURNE, this day. For the first time in 3S years, the Ecclesiastical Court of the Melbourne Anglican Diocese sat to-day to hear charges of blasphemy and heresy laid against the Rev. EL Hayes, a country clergyman and war padre. The charges follow publication by Mr. Hayes of writings challenging the Virgin Birth, and were laid by the Archbishop of Melbourne, Dr. F. W. Head. Mr. Hayes has prepared a !300,000word brief answering them. The Ecclesiastical Court last sat in 1897 to hear charges of drunkenness against a priest, who was found guilty and suspended for three months.
