BRITISH HONOURS.

There is more interest than usual in the Birthday Honours List for Britain. Lord Bledisloe's elevation in the peerage ia a thoroughly well-merited mark of approval of the fine work he did as Governor-General of this country. Honours bestowed on leaders in the Labour movement are a reminder of the strictly constitutional nature of the position which that party maintains in politics. The arts and sciences are well represented. There are. three recruits for the most exclusive of all orders, the Order of Merit—the Poet Laureate, the distinguished Dr. Vaughan Williams, one of the men who are liable to be forgotten when itis said England has no native music; and Sir Frederick Gowland Hopkins, who by discovering vitamins opened up a new vista for medicine. There are book-lovers all over the Empire Avho will Tead with special interest of the knighthood bestowed on Mr. Bruce Bichmond, editor of "The Times Literary Supplement." This is a tribute to sound criticism in general and in particular. To those who follow at all closely tfhe trend' of literature, this famous weekly, the foremost of its kind in the Empire if not in the English-speaking world, is indispensable, yet oven in the world of journalism Sir Bruce Richmond's name has been known to very few. The honour primarily is a recognition of his fine work as e'ditor, but it also may be taken as an acknowledgment of tho enterprise of "The Times" in founding and developing the Supplement.
