ONEHUNGA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The Onehunga Borough Council met last night, the Mayor, Mr. J. Park, presiding. Fire Board.—The secretary of the Auckland Metropolitan Fire Board advised that the levy payable by the council for the year ending March dl, 1930, was £028 0/. The boards estimate of expenditure ■ for the year had been approved by the Hon. Minister at £30,220. Repeal of Exemption.—The clauses in the Motor Vehicles Amendment Act, 19''7 have been repealed as from June 1 next. Exemption from payment of license fees in respect of cars owned by the council will not be granted for the year 1935-30. Motor Mechanic—Mr. L. Pike was appointed temporarily to repair and keep in order the council's vehicular plant. Mount Albert Road—The Chief Postmaster informed the council that the conference held at his office representing Onehunga, Mount Albert, and Mount Roekill resolved: (1) That Mount Albert Road be numbered in one series, commencing from New North Road to Royal Oak. (2) That the Post and Telegraph Department allocates the numbers to be used by'each local body and informs the local body concerned of the numbers so allocated. Mr. A. A. Coates said he represented the council at the conference. Only about four chains on the southern side of Mount Albert Road was under the jurisdiction of the.Onehunga Borough Council. Committees.—The following committees were set up:—Streets, building, drainage, and workshop committee: The Mayor, Messrs. Gilchrist (chairman), Barnett, and Haydon. Waterworks committee: Messrs. Haydon (chairman), Bishop, Jamieson, and Garside. Legal and finance committee: The Mayor (chairman), Messrs. Coates, Cox, and Haydon. Library committee: Messrs. Benfell, Coates, and Garside, and, as citizens' representatives, Messrs. T. S. Baesett, H. J. Davics, C. A. Osborne, and A. C. Ro\ye. l'arks and reserves committee: Messrs. Barnett (chairman), Coates, Garside, and Bishop. Purchasing committee: Messrs. Cox (chairman), Benfell, and Bishop. Band committee: Messrs. Bishop, Garside, and Jamieson. Deputy-Mayor: Mr. A A. Coates. Delegates to the Auckland buburban Local Bodies' Association: Messrs. Coates and Cox. Representative on the Onehunga branch of the Auckland Metropolitan Unemployment Relief Committee: Mr. Barnett. Street Telephone.—Recently the council gave a taxi company permission to install a telephone box on a pole at the corner of Queen Street ami Princes Street West, outside the post office. The ringing of this phono at night has caused the postmaster and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Petchell, a lot of annoyance, so they informed the council last night and asked that the box be removed. They also complained that on race days taxis extended past their front door in Princes Street, making it most inconvenient to use that entrance. Referred to committee.
Call Money.—The town clerk reported that the sum of £10,000 held at call might be called up within the week unless the council was prepared to pay 3% per cent interest for the same. No increase is to be paid.
Not Received.—An anonymous letter was not accepted by the council. Commenting on it, the Mayor said the writer was either nervous or did not want his name known. If, however, the writer would send a courteous letter to the town clerk it would be dealt with by the council. The letter was passed round the table and committed to the waste paper basket.
