LOCAL BODIES.

NEW LYNN.

The first ordinary meeting of the newlyelected New Lynn Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor, Mr. Geo. Lawson, presided, other members present being Messrs. A. Jeffrey, Geo. Seyerne, A.' Woolley, S. Hards, F. Carter and C. Drury. Land Sale.—Only one tender was received for the purchase of two and a half acres of luhd on Dudley Avenue. Mr. W. Meikle offered £75 for the area, and the council resolved to sell at that figure. St. John Ambulance.—Permission was granted the St. John Ambulance Association to take up a collection in the borough on October 4. School Grounds.—The works committee reported having conferred with the school committee relative to drainage improvements being made in the school grounds. Certain works were agreed upon, subject to the school committee providing the necessary materials. Boundary Culvert.—A letter was received from the Waitemata County Council respecting the proposal to install a new culvert at the Hutchinson Avenue boundary, iu place of the one which was recently destroyed by a storm. The county engineer Btated that he had made an inspection of the locality and was of the opinion that a reinforced box culvert could be built for a lower sum than £47 10/, which was the estimated cost submitted by the borough foreman. He would prepare an estimate for tho work. Storm Water Drainage.—The borough foreman submitted for the councils approval two schemes of stormwater drainage. The first was Kimu Street from the gully five chains from Rata Street, to a point opposite Karaka Street, and consisted of a 2ft semi-circular headed culvert from the cesspit in the gully to tho uphill sido of Nlkau Street to connect up to two cesspits, one on either side of Rimu Street, then on up the right hand side in an 18m semi-circular culvert to Karaka Street. The estimated cost was £306 4/9. _ The second scheme dealt with Hutchinson Avenue at an estimated cost of £122 15/0. Tho matter was deferred pending consideration of the council's estimates.
