THE PIXIE LANTERNS.
(By Ruth Park, 7S, SnndringUam Road, Auckland.) Last night 1 went a-crceping, When all was quiet and still, Along tlic sleeping roadway That lies beneath the hill. There was no sound, no rustle Of leaf or friendly tree, The whole world lay a-sleeping, And left the dark to me. I listened, there was silence — And yet there came a singing Of strange and furtive voices, And fairy bells a-ringing; And trooping down from glen and dell, And past the silent mill, I saw the pixie lanterns Go bobbing down the hill. Thirty little pixie men Went trooping through the dark, For each a glowing lantern, A tiny vagrant spark. I heard their fairy chatter And goblin bells a-ringing, As all adown the glades and glens The goblin men came swinging. Thirty pixie lanterns Went bobbing through the mist, Like candle-flames of emerald, And blue, and amethyst. They twinkled down the silent road And in and out again, And blinked from out the sleeping trees Above the fairy men. Then one by one they disappeared, The tinkling goblin bells Were silent in the valleys And far-off hidden dells. There was no sound in or sky— And not a whisper told Of pixie-men with lanterns Of amethyst and gold.
