COLLECTION AT WHANGAREI. HARBOUR BOARD'S GATX. (By Telegraph.—Own correspondent.) WHAXGARET, this day. The control of goods traffic at the town wharf was the subject of a report Iby the secretary, Mr. W. M. Fraser, I which was considered by the Whangarei Harbour Board yesterday. Mr. Fraser stated that the Harbour i Board assumed control of the handling of goods ct the town wharf and shed and the collection of its wharfage charges in November, 1931. Previously that work, including the collection, on a commission basis, of the board's wharfage charges, had been handled by a shipping company. For the three years ended November 30, 1934. receipts had totalled £2909 4/3, which included £088 13/0 saved in commission formerly paid for wharfage collection. Expenditure amounted to £1301 8/9, of which £129.') 10/ was for wages. The net earnings for the three years were thus £1007 15/, and the net yearly" gain £555 18/6. In addition it was estimated that fully £250 a year was recovered which was previously loet through faulty measurement of goods. Since the board took control additional shipping companies had entered the trade, and. nder an arrangement made by the board, the ship owners were paying the receiving and delivery charges. Last month imports to Whangarei bv sea totalled 1313 tons, while exports were 5181 tons. Last year's figures for the same month were 1193 tons and 3905 tons respectively.
