ILLEGAL TRAWLING.
A WHANGAREI ALLEGATION. DRAG NETS IN HARBOUR. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this day. An allegation that fish were being depleted in the Whangarei Harbour by the use of drag nets was made at yesterday's meeting of the Whangarei Harbour Board by Mr. R. H. Allan, who said he had received information that a trawler had come into Urquhnrt's Bay and trawled with a drag net there. Mr. J. A. Finlayeon, the chairman, Said the law barred trawlers from dragging within three miles of the coast. Although it was believed that trawling was going on in the harbour, the trouble was to find someone to como forward and give evidence.
"It rests entirely with the fishermen and the people," commented Mr. W. M. Fraser. "They have been asked to report such cases, but they are not doiii" it." '
Mr. Fraser explained that application had been made to have the whole of the area inside a etraight line from Bream Head to Bream Tail protected, but so far that had not"been considered by the authorities responsible.
