FINANCIAL FAILURE.
GIANT EX-GERMAN LINER. WASHINGTON, March 20. . The Department of Commerce has granted the United States Line permission to withdraw the steamship Leviathan from the transatlantic service. This giant German liner (formerly the Vaterland), which the Government acquired in the Great War and reconditioned ax, a cost of 8,000,000 dollars, to bo the flagship of the line, has been a continual financial failure. In return for the permission to break its contract to keep the vessel in the service, the Lino has agreed to construct a sister ship to the Manhattan and the Washington, and the Government probably will grant financial assistance under Mr. Roosevelt's shipping subsidy plan now ucfore Congress.
