"MOSTLY FOR LOVE."
WORK FOR EDUCATION. A decision to support the Wellington Education Board's suggestion to the Minister that the honoraria of chairmen of the various education boards throughout New Zealand should be increased was reached by tho Auckland Board yesterday. "I do not think chairmen are anything like adequately paid," said Mr. J. Bowyer. "When you consider the amount of work they do and their frequent attendances at the board offices, their honoraria are very small. It seems to me they do four-fifths for love and one-fifth for pay." The Chairman, Mr. T. U. Wells: Service given for love is the best service. I do not think this board need make any recommendation. The secretary pointed out that the Act laid it down that the honorarium of a chairman was not to exceed £103 a year, but it also laid down a maximum allowance of £500 for nine boards. The honorarium for the Auckland chairman was fixed at £100, but with the cuts it had been brought down to £89 16,/. - "It- is a labour of love on my part," said Mr. Wells.
