MEAT IMPORT.
BRITISH SCHEME.
! LONG-TERM POLICY. i
Levy on Foreign and Dominion Produce. AIM TO MAINTAIN" PRICES. (United P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 12 noon.) LONDON, February 11. Britain has at last presented the Dominions with a long-term meat policy. It was submitted at a full meeting, including Mr. Walter Elliot, Minister of Agriculture, Mr. J. 11. Thomas, Dominions Secretary, and Sir John Gilmour, Home Secretary, and the Dominion High Commissioners. Mr. Malcolm Mac Donald, Under-Secre-tary for the Dominions, in a letter, detailed his inquiries in Australia and New Zealand. Each High Commissioner spoke, but no decisions were reached. The issues, however, were clarified. Unofficial comment described the meeting as cordial, and good progress was said to have been made. It is learned that the policy submitted, broadly, is based on the White Paper issued on January 30. It proposes 18 months' operation, featuring a levy of Id per lb on foreign and Jd on Dominion imports, plus a slight restriction. Mr. Elliot pointed out that the longterm should not be regarded as the British but the Empire policy, suggesting that it essentially aimed at thu benefit of the Dominions in common with other exporters and home growers. It was not designed to bolster up inefficient British agriculture at the Dominions' expense. The policy was solely concerned with maintaining prices.
