Three young men stopped a lorry driver on the Levin-Foxton highway and said they were out of benzine. The driver offered to tow them to Foxton. Noticing that the number plates of the car were smeared with mud, he advised the police, but on arrival the men had decamped. They were later seen making across country. A search is proceeding.
