HOLIDAYS FOR STAFF
At its final meeting of the year yesterday afternoon, the Auckland Harbour Board approved a clause amending the Auckland Harbour Board Empowering Act l!»2ii to provide for borrowing the money for the purchase of a now tug. The chairman, Mr. T. B. Clay, presided.
It was decided to make a grant of £20 to the Auckland Anniversary Regatta committee. A request by the committee that the board should grant it permission to rope oft' the western side of the Prince's wharf and to make a charge for admission was declined.
The board resolved to send a letter of sympathy to the relatives of the late Mr. Dvnes Fulton.
Some discussion look place concerning a motion by Mr. W. B. Darlow, that resolutions passed by the board in 1031 and H132 reducing the annual leave- of the board's officers and curtailing the sick leave limit of employees, be rescinded, and that the board should revert to the regulations relating to sick and annual leave that were in force prior to .September, 193 L Mr. Darlow said that the board had made no saving by curtailing annual leave, but had caused a lot of friction among the staff. Sonic members of the staff, he added, had to work on seven davs a week.
After questions had been asked concerning the number of men affected and the extent of their Sunday work, the matter was referred to the board in committee, despite protests by several members that that meant that no action would be taken until after the holiday period was over;
In wishing members the compliments of the season, the chairman expressed appreciation of their loyalty and help, and also paid a. tribute to the heads of the departments and the staff. ; Ferry Vessels' Capacity. After considering a letter from the Devonport Steam Ferry Co., it which it was stated that the Marino Department had agreed to the carrying capacity of five of itd vessels being reduced to under 1000 passengers each, the board in committee recommended: (1) That the company be informed that, as the increase of 31 per cent agreed on in 102!) had not reached the revenue required, the board would require to raise its charges so as to yield the revenue provided by the Barton Commission, and the subsequent mutual agreement of 1020, and (2) that a protest should be made to the Marinej Department against its action in
reducing tho carrying capacity of ferry steamers without; consulting 'the board. The recommendations were approved.
