DUKE APPEARS OX BALCONY.

NAPIER, this day. Six thousand adults and four thousand children participated in a demonstration ,in McLean Park, Napier, where the Duke of Gloucester made another lasting impression. Departing from the ararnged programme at the end of the reception he walked round the entire ground amid scenes of great enthusiasm, and also to the accompaniment of resounding cheers, Hying headgear and fluttering hand flags.
In his reply to speeches of welcome the Duke expressed his admiration of the courage shown by the people of Napier in the earthquake period aud his pleasure at the complete restoration and beautifieation of the town. "May you be spared long to enjoy lives of happiness free from anxiety and trouble," he added.
i .As at Hastings the Duke's remarks to the children were extempore and the cheers rivalled those of the southern town wlien he announced an extra day's holiday.
The Duke in public to-day is wearing a grey lounge suit with a carnatiin in the buttonhole. After his arrival at the Masonic Hotel, where he was accorded another reception by the waiting crowds, he appeared on the balcony hatless and waved to the assembled sightseers.
This afternoon the Duke is returning to Hastings for a game of polo with members of the local club. This evening ho will dine at the Hawke's Bay Club, Napier.
