Marie Louise Diary Fetches

£490 in London

SCOLDED BY NAPOLEON. (Received 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, December 18. Marie Louise's diary for the years from 1810 to 1813 was sold for £490 at Sotheby's. It describes her impressions on boarding the Charlemagne, the first warship she had seen. She says that she showed so much of her legs ascending the steps that she vowed not to climb a battleship again without wearing trousers. She caught rheumatism through Napoleon taking her for an evening walk ill short sleeves. Napoleon frequently scolded and ordered her about. 'She-declares: "Men are insufferable. If I returned from another world I certainly would not marry."
