TO-DAY IN CHRISTCHURCH.

(By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Calls have been steadily active in recent days on the Stock Exchange, and this morning another good volume of business was done at varying price levels. Government stocks and bonds were in good demand, 4 per cent, 1955 stock, advancing 5/, and 1940 bonds improving by the same amount. Commercial Bank of Australia looked a shade easier, with quotations between 16/1 and 16/2, and preference scrip lost ground fractionally, with business at 1/ lower than yesterday's level. New South Wales quotations narrowed to 2/6 on either side of £32. New Zealand banks were firm, Reserve sellers asking £6 11/ without business. New Zealands had dealings at 3d higher. The insurance section was steady, with Nationals showing a distinct advance in buyers' offers, which were at £1 1/4, compared with sales at £1 1/1 yesterday. Sellers to-day were right off the market. Holders of A.P.A. asked 11/6, which was 2d above buyers. Among brewery companies the recent decline in New Zealands continued, with the scrip on offer to-day at £2 9/9, the market showing a big margin between this level and buyers' offers of £2 9/. staples had a seller on 'Change at Id less than the price paid in reported business. Ihe announcement of the interim dividend of Australian Glass made little difference to quotations, and further business was done on a falling market at 5d less than last sale. Holders asked £2 11/8 at the close. British Tobacco were again on the sales list, this time at a lower level, and after business there were more shares on olfer at the sales price. Holders of Dunlop, Perdriau Rubber stayed firm at £1, and buyers at 19/10 could not do business. Preference shares, which are rarely quoted on the local Exchange, had reported business at £1 16/3. In the mining section Nokomai _ fell sharply, compared with the last business dealing being made at 3/, buyers offering at the same level after sales. Skippers also lost ground.
